07 Apr 10 Timeless Marketing Courses & Books
There are a lot of courses & books to choose from. Here is a curated list of my timeless favourites.
1. The Halo Effect

The Halo Effect reveals how our tendency to judge companies based on success creates biased narratives. It challenges popular business books, arguing that many conclusions are based on flawed data, reinforcing myths rather than uncovering the real drivers of performance.
2. Mark Ritson’s miniMBA

Hands down, Mark’s miniMBA in Marketing is the single best marketing course I’ve ever taken. He’s recently moved the program from Marketing Week to its own stand alone platform which should lead to more improvements in the delivery of this online course. 31,000 people and counting have completed these programs and they consistently give rave reviews about the immediate impact of the programs.
3. Obviously Awesome

I find positioning is one of the most challenging subjects in marketing. Obviously Awesome offers a clear step-by-step framework tailored for today’s crowded, fast-moving markets. April Dunford’s approach is hands-on, actionable, and specifically builds on builds on the classic, but more theoretical, Positioning by Ries and Trout.
4. The Effectiveness System 2.0

The Swedish advertising association (Sveriges Annonsorer) have spent years developing and refining this KPI workshop. The Effectiveness System 2.0 reflects a summary of the best marketing evidence through 36 KPIs arranged in a periodic table-like format. This comprehensive framework helps marketers plan, measure, and improve advertising effectiveness that drives sustainable growth and accountability in marketing efforts.

5. How Brands Grow

How Brands Grow is the most disruptive and evidence-based marketing book since Kotler, redefining decades of brand theory with data and proving that much of traditional marketing wisdom is wrong. It’s a landmark shift toward science-driven, growth-focused strategy which proves that growth comes from broad reach, mental and physical availability, and light buyers—not loyalty.

6. Masters of Advertising Effectiveness

James Hurman is one of the worlds leading experts on advertising and creative effectiveness. In this course, James uses real-word examples to teach the most up-to-date, evidence‑based principles like excess share of voice, creative commitment, and mental availability.

7. Smart Branding Book

Dan White has created a remarkable book full of useful bite-sized ideas and visuals representing the best evidence in marketing today. It’s a great book for anyone who wants to keep a reference at the side of their desk. If for no other reason, this book is worth owning for the dozens of excellent case studies.

8. Creativity Inc.

In Creativity, Inc., Ed Catmull shares what he learned building Pixar—how they kept creativity alive, dealt with failure, and built a team that trusted each other. It’s an inside look at leading with honesty, protecting ideas, and staying innovative.
9. Creating Great Choices

This brilliant book from Roger Martin & Jennifer Riel (IDEO) is really a tool box for innovation and creativity. This book outlines the integrative thinking method used for resolving tough decisions by combining opposing ideas into better solutions. Through real examples and practical tools, it helps leaders move beyond trade-offs to create smarter, more innovative choices.

10. Resonate

I often joke is that my main job in Marketing is to build decks. In this case, Nancy Duarte’s book Resonate is THE guide to crafting powerful presentations that connect emotionally and drive action. Using storytelling principles and visual thinking, Nancy does a fantastic job teaching how to structure messages that resonate with audiences, spark engagement, and create lasting impact.
